Tokens in chat

The in-chat token bar, usage warnings, and how to raise a chat's limit.

Last updated on

Every conversation has a token budget. A thin bar above the input shows how much of it you've used; it turns amber at 75% and red at 90%.

How a conversation grows

Drag to see roughly how many tokens a conversation uses as it goes on. You pay full price for each new message; re-reading the conversation so far is cached, so only a small fraction counts.

How the limit is decided

How a chat's limit is decided

1st

Per-chat override

A limit set for one specific conversation. Wins if present.

2nd

Your global preference

Your default for all chats, from AI settings or the in-chat control.

3rd

Default, 120,000 tokens

Used when neither of the above is set.

Raising the limit

Open the token counter to pick a preset or a custom value, choose This chat only or Change globally, acknowledge the note, and confirm. New chats use your global default.
